A day in the life of a Better Rehabber

Have you ever wondered what a typical day is like for a Better Rehabber?

We asked one of our Occupational Therapists to give us insight into their experience!

Breakfast at Better Rehab

The Better Rehab office opens at 8:30, but when I’m able I try to arrive early to have some breakfast. Breakfast is available in all Better Rehab offices across the country, which means I can grab a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee to make sure I’m energised and ready to start the day.

This is also a great time for me to catch up with other clinicians. Going to an office means there is a chance for clinicians from various disciplines to collaborate or brainstorm. It makes me feel really supported, and reminds me that I need not be alone in solving problems and can ask for help anytime.

Emails and report writing

Time to start the workday! I first check my calendar to go over the meetings or training sessions I will be attending in the next few weeks, and check my emails if there are any urgent messages I need to respond to right away.

Today I have a plan review report to draft for one of my participants. The plan review report outlines how the support provided has helped the participant work towards their goals, and is very helpful in ensuring they are on track to achieving what they want. I can also make recommendations for additional supports, for example if the participant can benefit from seeing a Physiotherapist or Exercise Physiologist. This will guide them in setting new goals for the future.

The plan review report can affect my participant’s NDIS funding – for example, if my recommendations for additional supports get approved – so I take my time in writing this and consulting with more senior clinicians to ensure that the report is complete and my recommendations are backed by evidence.

Initial Assessment Booking

Our Office Manager has booked an initial assessment with a participant who is thinking of engaging Better Rehab as a service provider. They have set up a meeting with the participant for next week so I can meet them and their carer. By conducting the initial assessment, I will know more about their history and situation so we can see how Better Rehab can best help them.

Lunch

Before I know it, it’s time for lunch! The weather’s nice, so I bring my lunch out in the courtyard and enjoy the sunlight with the other clinicians.

Home modifications

I drive out to a participant’s home to meet with them about their home modifications request. Due to a recent diagnosis, they are at an increased risk for falls and would like to add grab rails so they can still conduct self-care activities on their own. I arrive to assess their home environment and tell them that I will get in touch with one of our builders to get a quote.

My fellow OTs have had success with home modifications, so I’m feeling positive about this request!

Cooking

I hear back from one of my participants, who is learning how to cook independently! I have coached them on meal preparation so they can gain confidence. Better Rehab has a lot of stories about participants successfully making their own meals.

I love how varied our participants’ goals are. No two participants are the same, and no two days are the same, and I’m very grateful to be on this career path and continue helping people.

Back to the Better Rehab office

Back to the office! In addition to breakfast, there are also snacks, coffee and tea available at the office throughout the day. I grab a quick snack and some green tea and continue work on my participant’s plan review report.

Heading home

Another fulfilling day – I log out and say goodbye to my colleagues!
