At Better Rehab, we are passionate about creating an inclusive community. So, we were thrilled to attend this year’s Deaf Festival.
What an incredible event. Held on the beautiful shore of the Parramatta River, The Deaf Festival celebrates the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.
Danielle, our Auslan fluent QLD Deputy Manager, represented Better Rehab this year—along with Occupational Therapists Breanne and Paige.
Our Better Rehab team enjoyed a full program of activities. People of all ages and abilities were catered for—from jumping castles and plaster painting for the kids, to market and information stalls for the adults.
Paige learned how to say her name, and how to say “I work as an OT” at the fest! Watch here here:
We showcased some really cool assistive technology—including a smoke alarm with a flashing light, a vibrating alarm clock flashing light & bed shaker.
Breanne shared her experience:
“During the festival I was hit with an array of emotions. I was amazed to see so many people (hearing, non-hearing, young and old) who knew how to sign and the sense of community in front of me.
I was also overwhelmed and confronted by what felt like “role reversal” – I wasn’t able to actively communicate my thoughts, which is something I feel a lot of people who are Deaf or hard of hearing would experience on a day to day basis. I definitely found it a worthwhile experience and am glad I went!”
