Now we’re cooking!

Over the course of just one year, participant Jen went from never having cooked to planning and preparing a variety of meals.

With a desire to cook meals and make snacks, participant Jen turned to Better Rehab to help her develop her skills in the kitchen.

Our Occupational Therapists work with people of all ages to help them gain daily living skills and this includes meal planning, shopping for food, preparing and cooking meals – and washing up!

Working with her local Better Rehab OT and family, Jen decided to focus on meal preparation first, with the goal of gradually increasing her skills to be able to prepare dishes for herself and her family ‘from scratch’.

With instructions on using standard kitchen utensils and a modified chopping board organised by her OT, Jen was soon preparing a variety of savoury and sweet dishes, including pizza, sushi, pasta, Bolognese sauce, and cupcakes.

Jen’s next goal was sourcing ingredients. So, with a shopping list in hand, and her OT by her side, Jen adeptly found and purchased the items she needed at her local store.

From novice to competent cook

As they say, ‘the proof’s in the pudding’ and these photos of Jen’s vegetable tofu noodle dishes and chickpea burgers that she prepared with the assistance of her support worker, sent to us by her proud family, reveal how far she has come in her culinary journey.

If you or a loved one would like to learn to cook or develop skills in the kitchen like Jen, simply contact Better Rehab on 1300 073 422. Our OTs can help you create food in a way that suits you and your taste preferences!
