#LotsOfSocks for World Down Syndrome Day

Better Rehabbers take part in the #LotsOfSocks campaign!

Did you know that we celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on the 21st of March as a nod to the extra chromosome 21 that leads to Down Syndrome? To celebrate this day, we rocked our colourful socks as part of the #lotsofsocks campaign! This campaign is designed to start a conversation about celebrating and accepting each other’s uniqueness, and to raise awareness about Down Syndrome.

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day is held annually on the 21st of March to raise awareness about the rights and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome as well as to celebrate their lives and achievements. This day encourages discussion and acceptance of our differences.

What is Down Syndrome?

As of 2019, there are more than 10,000 NDIS participants who list Down Syndrome as their primary disability. Down Syndrome is also known as trisomy 21 due to the extra third copy of chromosome 21. Chromosomes contain genes that determine how the body and brain develops, and the extra chromosome can cause learning difficulties, physical challenges and developmental delays.

Researchers still don’t know for sure why Down Syndrome occurs, but what is certain is that people with Down Syndrome can lead amazing lives and have a role in the community, and we need to work hard to make sure that they can get the support they need to achieve this.

Lots of Socks for World Down Syndrome Day

To get involved with World Down Syndrome Day, #lotsofsocks aims to raise awareness by wearing colourful socks! It encourages people to purchase colourful socks and start a conversation about Down Syndrome.

Wearing colourful socks and educating people about Down Syndrome is one small step to greater things! Here are our Better Rehabbers taking part in the campaign:
