Growing with Angus: How the Right Assistive Technology Supports Everyday Moments

Discover how physiotherapy and assistive technology help Angus move, play and participate in everyday activities at home and school.

As children grow, their needs change, and sometimes the equipment they rely on needs to change with them.

When Angus’s Better Rehab Physiotherapist began working with him and his family, one of the first priorities was reviewing his existing Assistive Technology to make sure it continued to support his movement, positioning and participation in everyday activities. Following a recent growth spurt, Angus’s walking frames and standing frame needed adjustments to ensure they continued to fit comfortably and safely.

For Angus, having equipment that meets his changing needs means he can continue enjoying the activities he loves, from exploring his surroundings to playing with his favourite toys and joining his classmates for Book Week.

Making Sure Angus’s Equipment Grows With Him

Angus uses Grillo Walking Frames at home and school, along with a Leckey Squiggles Standing Frame at home. As part of his Physiotherapy support, his Better Rehab Physiotherapist reviewed how he used this equipment across his everyday environments.

The review focused on making sure his walking and standing frames continued to meet his needs as he grew. Adjustments were made to help ensure the equipment remained appropriately fitted, supporting his movement, positioning and participation in daily activities.

This was an important part of Angus’s ongoing Physiotherapy support, helping his existing equipment continue to work for him as he developed and his physical needs changed.

Supporting movement, play and everyday independence

Angus loves using his walking frame to move independently around home and school.

Whether he’s exploring his surroundings, spending time with others or simply moving from one activity to the next, his walking frame helps him take part in daily routines in a way that works for him. His standing frame also plays an important role in his everyday activities. By providing a well-supported standing position, it helps Angus use his hands and arms more effectively during play and learning. From messy play and musical instruments to exploring his favourite toys, Angus can enjoy a range of activities while being comfortably supported.

These everyday moments show how appropriately fitted Assistive Technology can support Angus’s mobility, positioning and participation as he continues to grow.

A Little Cowboy’s Big Book Week Moment 🤠

One particularly special moment was seeing Angus join in his school’s Book Week celebrations. Dressed as Woody from Toy Story, Angus used his Grillo Walking Frame to take part in the fun alongside his classmates.

It was a lovely example of how assistive technology can support more than just movement. It also helps Angus participate in the school experiences and activities that matter to him. For Angus, that meant being right there with his peers, enjoying the celebrations as Woody!

Supporting Angus as his needs change

For Angus and his family, having assistive technology that continues to meet his needs is about more than equipment. They’re about supporting his ability to move around his home and school, participate in play and learning, and enjoy meaningful activities with others.

As Angus grows, regular equipment reviews and adjustments can help make sure his walking and standing frames continue to support his changing needs. His story highlights the importance of reviewing Assistive Technology as children grow, so the equipment they use continues to support their everyday function and participation. And for Angus, that means more opportunities to keep moving, playing, learning and enjoying the moments that matter most.
