Staff Spotlight: Georgia, Speech Pathologist

Georgia is one of our Speechies in Queensland!

Georgia completed a Bachelor of Speech Pathology at the Australian Catholic University (ACU) in Brisbane. Her interest in Speech Pathology was sparked by her sister’s experience with Speech Pathology sessions, paired with her love of helping people communicate and interact with others.

What made you study Speech Pathology?

Growing up, my sister attended frequent Speech Pathology. I always tried to be involved and help her with her home activities, which sparked my interest. I paired that with my love of helping and communicating/interacting with other people and have not looked back.

What is your favourite part about working with our participants?

I value meeting new people and feel extremely honoured that they welcome me into their lives and let me become a part of their story. I love nothing more than providing someone with the means to communicate their thoughts, especially when their disease or disability has taken that away from them.

Can you think of a time recently that made you feel really proud to be working with Better Rehab?

I recently had the opportunity to present to a group of participants who have a diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease about voice banking and message banking. Following the presentation, I received a follow-up up to say that a few people had begun the process of recording their voice. I felt extremely proud and honoured that I was given the platform to present on something that I am very passionate about, and that I know will help so many people and their families who are living with this disease.

I also really enjoy how the Gold Coast team shares their weekly wins – I am always so blown away by the hard work the Gold Coast team puts in and what they manage to achieve for their clients. Makes me feel very proud!

What is something unique or interesting about you?

I grew up on a remote property, outside of a tiny country town (population of 49 people). I had a deep passion for animals and the land. I spent most of my childhood riding horses and always figured I would one day become a vet and own my own small property – except now I am living the total opposite. I live on the busy Gold Coast with my two Border Collies, where we swim in the ocean nearly every day. I now have the best of both worlds!
