Dreaming big again

Since his Cerebral Palsy diagnosis, he has had to deal with increased muscle stiffness, reduced muscle control, and postural changes. It felt like every day, Michael inched closer to losing his freedom – until he finally became completely housebound last year, unable to go outside unassisted. 

The 67-year-old’s life might have taken an inevitable downward spiral, but then Better Rehab intervened to help make life better for Michael. His Occupational Therapist, Rebecca Small, arranged for him to get a powered wheelchair, while also actively working on improving his community access. 

“After his Physiotherapy session, we managed to go to the park and do some new exercises at the playground that he has never done before,” Rebecca said. 

Michael now goes outside independently, participates in activities in different environments, and has fun outdoors. Time was when he needed support workers to push him everywhere he went. Recently, Michael took his wife to dinner (with less support) for their anniversary. Today, he can drive around independently. With this newfound freedom and confidence, Michael now even spends time relaxing at his local shopping centre. 

Every time the weather is good, Michael is raring to go outside. While the diagnosis dashed his hopes for a while, now he dares to dream again. His goal is to continue being able to stand and hopefully take some steps again. We’re looking forward to helping him achieve that!
